Artist's Statement
I am grateful and excited by what evolves through me. I once began to paint designs on stones because at the time I had no canvas and I needed to create. This is how my gazing stones were born.
Music, pure joy, the shadow, and archetypes inspire and intrigue me. I tend to paint a series of detailed works using drips, washes, and textures, and then move to a design supported largely by negative space. I work with contraction and expansion and can be bold with color, but always with an underlying sense of rhythm. I've been drawing portraits most recently, working on a new oil painting within. I call this process inner painting, which is the stage where you are creating inside of yourself before the art manifests -- before the art bursts out of you and everything else in life just has to wait until the bursting is completed.
Painting brings my head down to the level of my heart. A teacher once told me that if you wish to understand a culture, study the art. Artists, a tall order indeed! Debra will be teaching a workshop on Color Mixing,
